Details

Habitat

It uses riverine forest, swamp forest, and mangrove edges. Waterside trees provide travel routes, food, and night resting sites.

Appearance

Body length is about 53-76 cm and weight about 7-24 kg. A large male nose, rounded belly, long tail, and reddish coat are distinctive.

Behavior

Diurnal and social, it moves through trees and may swim across channels. Groups often follow river corridors.

Feeding

It is herbivorous, eating young leaves, fruit, and seeds. A specialized stomach helps ferment leafy, fibrous foods.

Reproduction

Infants are carried by the mother and grow within the group. They learn river-edge travel and feeding trees by moving with others.

Notes

Its status is listed as Endangered. Loss of swamp and riverine forest is a major threat, making connected waterside woodland important.
