Habitat

It lives in rocky mountains, upland grassland, and dry valleys in Namibia, South Africa, and nearby areas. Main habitat types in this guide are mountain, grassland, desert.

Appearance

Typical length 210-260 cm, weight 240 kg-372 kg. Bold black-and-white stripes, a white belly, throat dewlap, and striped short mane are typical.

Behavior

It is diurnal and a herd-forming species. Small family groups move across steep slopes between water and grazing areas.

Feeding

It is herbivorous. Dry grasses dominate, including coarse seasonal growth.

Reproduction

Mares bear single foals that are protected within the family group.
