Habitat

It lives in dry grassland, shrubland, and semi-desert of northern Kenya and Ethiopia. Main habitat types in this guide are grassland, desert.

Appearance

Typical length 250-300 cm, weight 350 kg-450 kg. Fine stripes, large ears, a white belly, and a heavy body distinguish it.

Behavior

It is diurnal and often found in loose groups. Females and young form loose groups, while males defend territories with water or forage.

Feeding

It is herbivorous. Coarse grasses, shrubs, and leaves are eaten, with long movements during dry periods.

Reproduction

Mares bear single foals that learn to follow the mother and recognize her stripes.
