Details

Habitat

It uses cliffs, rocky country, forests, grassland, and semiarid landscapes. Nest ledges or sheltered sites near open hunting areas are favored.

Appearance

Wingspan is about 138-188 cm and weight about 1.5-4.6 kg. Long ear tufts, orange eyes, a heavy body, and broad wings give it a powerful presence.

Behavior

Nocturnal birds rest quietly by day in rocks or trees. At night they fly low and use keen hearing and vision to locate prey.

Feeding

It is carnivorous, taking mammals, birds, reptiles, and other prey. Strong feet secure prey before it is carried to a perch or nest.

Reproduction

Pairs nest on ledges, ground scrapes, or similar sheltered sites. Young are fed by the adults and later wander near the nest before flying well.

Notes

Its status is listed as Least Concern. It is adaptable, though disturbance and power-line risks can matter locally.
