Details

Habitat

It uses tropical, subtropical, and montane forests, sometimes reaching high elevations. Main habitat types in this guide are forest, mountain.

Appearance

Typical length 66-105 cm, weight 9 kg-16 kg. Coat color is highly variable, from golden-red to gray or dark, with pale facial streaks.

Behavior

It is active in repeated bouts across day and night and usually solitary. It is solitary and searches the forest floor for prey.

Feeding

It is carnivorous. Rodents, birds, reptiles, and small deer may be hunted.

Reproduction

Females give birth to small litters in concealed dens and rear them alone.

Notes

Declines or fragmentation make monitoring important. Deforestation and poaching make it scarce and difficult to monitor across much of its range.
