Details

Habitat

It lives mainly in forest, using large branches, vines, and the forest floor as travel routes. It is closely tied to Madagascar's woodland habitats.

Appearance

Body length is about 70-80 cm and weight about 5,500-8,600 g. A long tail, flexible body, and climbing feet give it strong arboreal ability.

Behavior

Usually solitary, it may be active by day or night. It moves quickly through trees and also stalks quietly on the ground.

Feeding

It is carnivorous, taking mammals including lemurs, as well as birds and reptiles. In complex forest, it mixes pursuit with ambush.

Reproduction

During the breeding season, several individuals may gather around particular trees or sites. Young are raised for an extended period in a hidden den.

Notes

Its status is listed as Vulnerable. Forest loss and fragmentation are key pressures, and it is an important native predator of Madagascar.
