Lives in woodland undergrowth, stream edges, scrub, rocky slopes, sea cliffs, and dense park vegetation.
The body is brown with fine barring, the bill is slender, and the short tail is often held upright.
It darts through low cover, fallen wood, and roots. Males build several domed nests and sing loudly to hold territory.
Small insects, spiders, larvae, and other arthropods are taken from leaf litter and bark crevices.
Moss and leaf nests are round with a side entrance. Females choose a nest and incubate the clutch.
Severe cold can reduce local numbers, but many populations recover quickly through strong breeding output.
