Details

Habitat

It uses tropical forest, dry woodland, grassland edges, and riverside thickets. It can hunt on the ground or in trees where cover is available.

Appearance

Length is about 180-400 cm and weight about 10-45 kg. The heavy body carries brown saddle markings, often with warmer reddish tones toward the tail.

Behavior

It waits alone on branches or the ground along prey routes. Young snakes climb frequently, while larger adults use the ground more often.

Feeding

It is carnivorous, taking small to medium mammals, birds, and reptiles. Nonvenomous, it kills by constriction and swallows prey whole.

Reproduction

It gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs. Newborn snakes disperse quickly and begin hunting independently.

Notes

Its status is listed as Least Concern. Trade for skins or pets can affect local populations, so sustainable management matters.
