Details

Habitat

It uses Andean mountains, cliffs, and open grasslands. High ledges are important for nesting and resting.

Appearance

Wingspan is about 270-320 cm and weight about 8-15 kg. Very broad wings, a black body, white wing patches, and a bare head are distinctive.

Behavior

Diurnal birds fly alone or in loose groups. They minimize flapping, soaring over large areas while scanning for food.

Feeding

It is carnivorous, feeding mainly on carrion of large animals. A strong bill opens hide, and the bird acts as an ecological scavenger.

Reproduction

A small clutch is laid on cliff ledges, and parents provide long care. Growth and breeding are slow.

Notes

Its status is listed as Vulnerable. Lead poisoning, persecution, and changes in food supply are key concerns.
